Selwood Housing celebrates ground-breaking at Margaret Stancomb school site

On Friday 11 October, Selwood Housing, a local housing association, celebrated the start of works to transform the former Margaret Stancomb school site in Trowbridge into new homes.

The ground-breaking event, attended by Selwood Housing Group board members Stella Shepherd, Richard Yates and Cllr Steve Oldrieve celebrated the beginning of work to transform the former school building into three shared ownership homes, along with an additional 18 homes for shared ownership and social rent.

Paul Walsh, Selwood Housing Group development director said, "We're pleased with the progress which has already been made by our contractor E G Carter. The temporary buildings situated around the site have now been cleared, and the important work to transform the former old school building has started."

"With over 400 households on the housing register in Trowbridge alone, brownfield sites like this give us the opportunity to deliver high quality affordable local homes with a fantastic central location, whilst redeveloping derelict areas. We look forward to seeing the first of these properties delivered in summer next year."

Phil Barnes, associate director at E G Carter said, "We are delighted to have supported Selwood in securing planning permission for this land led affordable housing development and are looking forward to delivering the new homes in 2020."

FAQ's

Who is Selwood Housing?

Selwood Housing is a not-for-profit housing association with over 6,400 homes for rent at affordable prices in Wiltshire, Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset. We also offer shared ownership, and other schemes to provide a wide variety of homes for people living in our communities. Any surpluses we make are invested back into our communities and this includes building more affordable homes locally.

Why are you planning to use this site to build new homes?

There is a housing crisis and a shortage of affordable homes in the UK. In the Trowbridge Community area there are currently 346 households in need of a range of affordable rented homes, from one bedroom upwards.

There are also 155 households registered for shared ownership.

The Margaret Stancomb site development is part of our plan to provide more affordable homes within Wiltshire, Mendip and BANES.

What is shared ownership?

Shared ownership is a great way of buying your own home, without having to find a huge deposit up front. With shared ownership you can buy a share of a home and pay a low rent on the rest. This gives you a great alternative to renting, if you can't afford to buy a home outright.

How can I apply for shared ownership?

You can register your details with us but you must also register with Help to Buy South https://www.helptobuysouth.co.uk/.

How much will the shared ownership houses cost?

They will be competitively priced and based on market values. Buyers can purchase a 40% share and pay a low rent on the rest. Prices for this development will be released close to when the homes are available.

What are your plans for the old school building?

We plan to keep the original school building and convert it into three shared ownership homes.
