Most people only realise they have birds in the roof when they are woken up by the noise of chicks.
Many of the birds that nest in roof spaces are protected species due to population decline. Read our tips below on what to do if you suspect birds are nesting in your home.
What to do if you suspect birds in your home
Active bird nests in your home must not be damaged or destroyed. All fledglings must have left the nest before any action is taken. This includes blocking the entrance to a nest or removing a nest.
If a nest needs to be removed, this will need to be carried out by a professional with a licence to do so.
In line with RSPB guidance, all bird nests are protected by law, including pigeons and sea gulls. It is illegal to intentionally disturb or destroy the active nest of any wild bird.
