Hundreds of local residents gathered in Trowbridge town park on Friday 28 November to celebrate the annual lantern parade, held as part of the town’s Christmas lights switch on event. This year’s event, supported with a grant from Selwood Housing’s stronger communities fund, enabled Trowbridge Town Council to provide free lantern-making materials to the community, making the festivities more accessible and inclusive than ever before.
In the weeks leading up to the parade, Trowbridge Museum hosted free workshops, inviting people of all ages to craft their own lanterns. The community engagement team also distributed free ‘Lantern Packs’ to local schools, cadet groups, and families, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to participate. The result was a stunning display of colourful and unique lanterns, illuminating the park and bringing together families, children, nurseries, and community groups in a magical shared experience.
Izzie Compton, community engagement and governance manager, reflected on the event’s success: “The lantern parade was even more popular this year – we gave out significantly more free resources to the local community, and it was fantastic to see so many unique and vibrant lanterns parade through the park. The event had a real community feel with happy, smiling faces all round!”
For many, the parade was a chance to get involved in a cherished tradition. Becky, a Trowbridge resident, shared her experience: “Last year I attended the Christmas lights switch on with my two children and we watched the parade, but this year we were able to get free lantern making kits from the Civic Information Centre and join in! It felt special to be a part of the parade and part of the event.”
Selwood Housing’s support was instrumental in making the lantern parade accessible to all, fostering a sense of togetherness and celebration in the heart of Trowbridge. The lantern parade stands as a shining example of how community partnerships can create lasting memories and strengthen local bonds.
