Hate crime and hate incidents

Hate crime and hate incidents

Everyone should feel safe, respected and welcome in their home and neighbourhood. Selwood Housing does not tolerate hate crime or hate incidents of any kind.

A hate incident or hate crime happens when someone is treated unfairly, threatened, abused or targeted because of who they are.

This could be because of a person’s protected characteristics, including:

  • disability
  • race, ethnicity or nationality
  • religion or beliefs
  • sexual orientation
  • gender identity
  • age
  • sex
  • any other characteristic protected by law.

A hate incident or hate crime can take many forms. It might include:

  • threatening, abusive or offensive behaviour
  • harassment or bullying
  • damage to property
  • abuse online or on social media
  • any other behaviour that makes someone feel scared, upset or unsafe.

You do not need to be certain that something is a hate incident or hate crime before reporting it. If you feel you have been targeted because of who you are, please let us know.

We take all reports seriously. We will investigate what has happened and put your safety and wellbeing first. When deciding whether something is a hate incident or hate crime, we take into account how the person affected feels, as well as information from others who may have witnessed the incident.

Where needed, we will work with the police, local authorities and other organisations to support you, help prevent further incidents and take appropriate action. We will keep you updated and offer support based on your individual needs.

If you are in immediate danger, call the police on 999.

You can also report hate crime or hate incidents you have witnessed to Selwood Housing so we can take appropriate action.
