Group 5, the West Wiltshire based furniture charity, is celebrating 35 years of providing free furniture and household essentials to families and individuals in need across the county.
Founded 35 years ago after members of a local church identified a young family struggling to afford furniture for their home, Group 5 was established to respond to a clear and urgent community need. What began as a small act of compassion quickly grew, as public interest and support led to the formation of what is now a long‑standing and trusted local charity.
Named to reflect the five towns it serves, Bradford‑on‑Avon, Trowbridge, Melksham, Westbury and Warminster, Group 5 has remained committed to supporting residents across West Wiltshire. The charity believes it is the only free furniture charity operating in Wiltshire, providing all its services entirely free of charge.
Group 5 collects good quality donated furniture and household appliances at no cost. These items are then provided free to people who are unable to afford them, following referrals from recognised organisations such as a local council, housing association, GP surgery, social worker, church, or advice service. Once a referral is received, the charity contacts the family to understand their needs and supplies the required furniture completely free of charge.
Despite changing times, the demand for Group 5’s services has not diminished. Even in 2026, volunteers continue to arrive at empty homes to help families turn bare rooms into safe, welcoming living spaces.
Speaking at the charity’s thirty fifth annual general meeting, David Gowen, Group 5 chairman reflected on the continued importance of its work and the strong partnerships that make it possible.
David expressed heartfelt thanks to its funders, local councils, housing associations, churches, referral partners and the wider public who support the charity financially and through donations. Special recognition was given to the charity’s dedicated volunteers, whose generosity of time and commitment ensures the service can continue.
“Without our volunteers and supporters, Group 5 simply could not operate,” he said. “Every single contribution helps us support people at some of the most difficult moments in their lives.”
As it marks this significant milestone, Group 5 remains focused on the future, continuing its mission to provide dignity, comfort and practical support to those who need it most.
