In October 2018, Selwood Housing Group invited local residents to a recycling event held at Charlotte Square, Trowbridge.
Not only were residents able to learn more about how they can reduce, reuse and recycle their household waste, they were also offered the opportunity to participate in a new recycling initiative, being trialled by Wiltshire County Council.
Working in partnership with the Council, all customers attending were offered a space saving recycling basket, a first for Wiltshire communities, as part of a 6-month trial for people living in blocks of flats. These recycling baskets can be readily stored and make transporting household items to the main communal recycling bins much easier. In total, 29 baskets were happily received, meaning 25% of flats in the Charlotte Square area now have a handy way to store and transport their recycling.
Many other activities were also up for grabs:
- Selwood Housing customers could share their thoughts and ideas with staff on improvements to the area
- Residents could dispose of large items free of charge in a skip, specially provided for the event
- Craft activities for children including planting seeds and making banana pancakes via a cycle-powered blender were provided by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust
Amee Dewitt, community engagement facilitator at Selwood Housing said,
”Not only was it fantastic to work so closely with our customers, it was also great to support all residents at Charlotte Square and the surrounding areas in this way.
Recycling is a really important message to all, not just our customers, and with Wiltshire Council putting in measures to ensure that we can make recycling easier, I hope we are collectively able to create a more sustainable place to live.”
