There are some alterations that we don't permit. We need to be able to maintain the roof and this is difficult if the panels are owned by somebody else.
At present, we’re unable to provide MCS certificates for the solar panels installed, as customers are not currently eligible to sign up for the smart export guarantee (SEG) scheme with our systems. Selwood Housing has been exploring this possibility, but due to ongoing practical and legal complexities—particularly around ownership and export rights—we’re not in a position to support SEG requests at this time.
We understand this may be disappointing. For now, the best way to benefit from the system is to make use of the electricity generated during the day while you're at home, which will help reduce your reliance on grid energy and lower your bills.
After careful consideration, plug‑in solar panels can’t currently be approved for use in Selwood Housing homes. This is because these systems can raise electrical safety concerns. They connect directly to a standard wall socket, which can affect important safety equipment in the home, such as residual current devices (RCDs) that help protect against electric shock and electrical fires.
There are also concerns about how well these systems work with existing household wiring, and whether installations meet safety requirements or have clear responsibility for maintenance.
For these reasons, and to help keep homes safe, we’re not able to approve plug‑in solar panels at this time. Technology in this area is developing, and we’ll keep our position under review as clearer guidance and proven solutions become available
