Trowbridge Future launch new community food initiative

Trowbridge Future is proud to announce the continued success of its three community fridges located on the Seymour, Studley Green, and Longfield estates, and the launch of a new Food Swap point at the Shires Shopping Centre Community Hub.

Each week, the community fridges rescue over 120kg of perishable, unsold food from going to landfill, feeding on average 150 residents. More than just a food access point, the fridges have become vibrant spaces of community cohesion, where neighbours share and swap items, building trust and solidarity.

Following a consultation with residents, Trowbridge Future has introduced a Food Swap initiative focused on store cupboard items – non-perishables like canned goods, pasta, and spices that residents may have in excess or no longer need. The concept involves exchanging non-perishable goods with friends, family, or community members, ensuring that everyone benefits from a wider variety of ingredients without spending extra money. To organise a swap, residents can start by sorting through their pantry and identifying items they haven’t used in a while or have excess of, such as canned goods, pasta, or spices.  They should remember to check expiration dates to ensure all exchanged items are safe for consumption. The swap point, located at the Shires Shopping Centre Community Hub offers a sustainable and cost-effective way for people to refresh their pantries while reducing household food waste.

“We listened to our community and saw a real opportunity to expand the spirit of sharing. The Food Swap point empowers them to take part in a circular economy, where surplus becomes a shared resource. Residents are encouraged to participate by sorting through their cupboards, checking expiration dates, and bringing unused items to the Hub. The initiative is open to all and aims to promote mindful consumption, food literacy, and environmental responsibility”. Zoe Meaden, Trowbridge Future community manager

Trowbridge Future, who have received funding via Selwood Housing’s Stronger Communities Fund, invites local businesses, volunteers, and community members to get involved and help grow these impactful projects. The Food Swap Trolley can be found at the Community Hub in the Shires Shopping Centre and is open to all.
