Supporting independent living

On this page you'll find a list of organisations that offer support, advice or activities for those with an illness or disability, helping them to live independent and full lives.

Alzheimer's Society

The Alzheimer's Society offers support and advice for those living with dementia, as well as their families and carers.

Carer Support Wiltshire

Carer Support Wiltshire is a registered charity that supports all unpaid carers, from 5 years upwards, in Wiltshire. They help carers access services, information, education and training, respite and breaks from their caring role.

Dorothy House

Dorothy House supports those with a life limiting illness to live and die well. They provide individual care journeys which start at diagnosis and continue with bereavement support for family members, carers and children. This includes a range of services from specialised medical support, complementary therapies, at home support and arranging experiences that create precious memories for families and friends. They also have a 24 hour advice line available for patients, their families/carers and healthcare professionals who need advice on someone's care.

Get Out Get Active

Get Out Get Active is a programme created to bring disabled and non-disabled people together to be active. See the Wiltshire and Swindon Sport website for a list of local GOGA activities.

Independent Living Centre, Semington

The Independent Living Centre is a charity based in Semington, near Trowbridge, offering free and impartial advice to older people, and people of any age with disabilities, living in Wiltshire and B&NES.

South Wilts Mencap

South Wilts Mencap supports people with learning disabilities; inspiring them to achieve their full potential and enabling them and their families to lead fuller lives. They offer:

  • clubs and events for a range of age groups
  • signposting through their Monday Bulletin
  • grants for people with learning disabilities
  • holidays

Warminster Action Group

Warminster Action Group is a local group, run by volunteers offering practical help, befriending and volunteering opportunities.

Wiltshire Centre of Independent Living

Wiltshire Centre of Independent Living supports disabled people living in Wiltshire to have choice and control to live independent lives. They offer a Community Connecting service which is a 1:1 service supporting those with disabilities to live a good life that they choose and helping them to improve their wellbeing through linking in with their community.
